Back to School Program | Dominican Republic
Summary
The Mencia Foundation helps underprivileged children in the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries get resources to get an education. We support children by providing the basic resources needed to attend school (i.e. notebooks, backpacks, pens/pencils). We also provide additional needed items such as shoes, socks, and undergarments. The purpose of this project is to provide school supplies to school children of rural communities in the Dominican Republic
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The Dominican Republic is one of the poorest countries in the Americas. One of the challenges is their undeveloped towns and rural areas. For families living in these communities, transportation is very difficult and traveling to the nearest town/city is challenging and buying their necessities is a problem. Additionally, most children walk to schools, and when it rains, they cannot get to school at all. Because they walk to school, their shoes become damaged faster than usual.
How will this project solve this problem?
We will purchase school supplies including backpacks and notebooks, as well as good quality walking shoes to facilitate their walking and ease the burden of having to travel to the nearest town to purchase supplies.
Potential Long Term Impact
We hope that with help, children will not miss schools because of the lack of resources and damaged shoes. We want them to continue to attend school, educate themselves, and attain a higher education for a better life, for them and their families.
